Welcome to my homepage.
I hope you enjoy this collection of thoughts, articles and ideas. This is an incredibly exciting time to be alive as a scientist, a mother, and a watcher of current events. We face astonishing breakthroughs and unprecedented ethical challenges. We are witnessing an age of unsurpassed novelty. The world wide web is linking us together in new and exciting ways, allowing us to share our thoughts and collaborate through cyberspace in ways we never could have imagined.
As scientists crack the human genome, we are faced with both amazing opportunities and ominous temptations. Opportunities to heal diseases and feed the world, temptations to alter the course of natural human development.
As the cold war thaws we can begin to grasp an era of peace and cooperation, where the inter-connectivity of the world wide web fosters a true global commons. Progress, both political and scientific, has increased our capacity to change each other’s lives.
I am amazed by the fact that I can put these thoughts and ideas in a place that does not exist in any physical sense. A series of ones and zeros can help me share my thoughts with anybody with a modem, anywhere in the world. Please think of this website as a sort of open journal, where I can communicate my excitement and curiosity, and hopefully inspire you to do the same.
I anticipate an age where everyone has a place like this one- an incorporeal address that anyone can visit, anywhere. As a scientist, I can share my thoughts and research, but I believe everyone has something that they should share with the world. My daughter, for instance, to whom I dedicate this site, has a lovely singing voice. One day perhaps we will log on to her site and hear it.
The internet is confirming and reinforcing what I always believed; that on a fundamental level we are all connected.
